Wheel-throwing for beginners
Two hours at the wheel with someone beside you the whole time. You'll centre the clay, pull a wall, and leave having made something you actually want to keep.
Pottery studio & cafe · Gillygate, York
The Kiln Room is an independent pottery studio and cafe on Gillygate. Learn to throw on the wheel, book a bench in an open studio session, or just sit with a homemade cake and watch somebody else make the mess.
What's on
Everything happens in one room — wheels at one end, cake at the other. Book ahead for classes and workshops; the cafe you can simply walk into.

Already know your way around a wheel? Book a bench, help yourself to the tools, and get on with your own work at your own pace.
Saturdays belong to the small ones. Clay, aprons, and absolutely no expectation that anything comes out symmetrical.
Homemade cakes and somewhere warm to sit, open to everyone whether you're throwing that day or not.
The cafe
The cafe is the other half of The Kiln Room, and you don't need to book, take a class, or touch a lump of clay to use it. Everything is homemade, and there's the low hum of a studio at work in the background.
How it works
Ring, email, or put your head round the door. Tell us what you fancy making and we'll point you at the right session.
Aprons on. You will get clay on your forearms and there is no way around that. Someone stays with you the whole time.
Your piece is fired and glazed here in the studio, then it waits on the shelf with your name on it. Ready in [turnaround time].
Nobody's first pot is any good. That is the entire point of making a second one.The house line at The Kiln Room
