The Kiln Room
About
The Kiln Room is an independent pottery studio and cafe at 12 Gillygate, in the centre of York. It is one room, doing two things at once: wheels and workbenches at one end, a small cafe with homemade cakes at the other, and usually a fair amount of clay on the floor in between.
What happens here
We run wheel-throwing classes for people who have never touched clay, open studio sessions for people who already know their way around a wheel, and workshops for kids on Saturdays. Everything is fired here in the studio.
The cafe is open to everyone. You do not have to book a class, own an apron, or have any interest in pottery whatsoever to come in, sit down and have a slice of cake.
Who runs it
[Who set up The Kiln Room, when, and what they made before this — tell us and we will write this section properly.]
Beginners, honestly
Most people who walk through the door have never used a wheel. That is the normal case here, not the exception, and nothing about the way we run a class assumes otherwise. Nobody’s first pot is any good — that is the entire point of making a second one.
